(My Own House)
Starting with the children I met in my first trip to Cite Soleil,
I want to build a community house for 15 boys and girls
ages 7 to 14 years old. Based on past experience, I
believe this is the age group where one can have the
most impact.
The community house is to be replicated in different
places in the country.
Under the leadership of a "house mother" they will grow
living as a family where on a regular basis they will be fed,
receive basic medical care, guaranteed an academic
education, hygiene, social and civic instructions.
The family setting will teach them to live collectively with potential future work colleagues in a cooperative
fashion. It will be an occasion for them to practice what is now missing in the country: unity, and to
achieve our country's motto: "L'Union fait la force".
This will not be an orphanage because most of the children's parents are alive and will be actively involved
in the community house. The children will be free to go home on weekends if they wish to. That will be an
opportunity for them to compare the life in their parents home and that in the community house, and to be
motivated to work toward changing their living condition without corrupting or prostituting themselves.
Make yourself home in "My Own House." Participate as best as you can by taking on an aspect of the
project:
- donating the land
- recruiting builders (Habitat for Humanity for instance)
- recommending the project to interested donors
- volunteering (students, doctors, nurses, social workers, teachers)
- last, not least, contributing financially to the project.
